Why the 90 Days Before Pregnancy Matter for Both Partners
Share
You don't have to start trying for a baby the second you decide you're ready.
In fact, there's a pretty compelling reason to consider giving yourselves about three months to prepare first.
The 90 days before conception can be an incredibly valuable window for both partners to make intentional changes to nutrition, lifestyle, environmental exposures, stress, sleep, and overall wellness.
Why?
Because the egg and sperm that eventually meet aren't created overnight. The process of developing mature eggs and sperm takes time, which means the months leading up to conception are worth paying attention to.
Instead of thinking:
"We're ready for a baby. Let's start trying."
You might think:
"We're ready for a baby. Let's spend the next 90 days getting ready for the baby we're hoping to create."
Fertility Isn't Just a Women's Health Project
Let's talk about something that gets overlooked far too often:
The male partner is half the equation.
When couples begin preparing for pregnancy, the focus often falls almost entirely on the woman. She starts taking prenatal vitamins, tracking ovulation, cleaning up her diet, changing her skincare, researching herbs, and scheduling appointments.
Meanwhile, the guy is still sitting in the hot tub with a beer and his laptop balanced on his lap.
I'm exaggerating.
Kind of.
Sperm health matters, too.
Sperm quality isn't only about sperm count. Things like motility, morphology, and DNA integrity can also be important considerations when thinking about reproductive health.
And sperm development is influenced by many of the same things that affect overall health: nutrition, sleep, stress, alcohol and tobacco exposure, heat, environmental exposures, and lifestyle.
That's why preparing for pregnancy should be a team effort.
You're not just preparing a womb.
You're preparing two bodies, one environment, and a relationship for a major life transition.
So What Should You Actually Do During Those 90 Days?
You don't need to completely reinvent your lives overnight.
The goal is to use those three months intentionally.
Think of it as three phases.
Month 1: Cleanse + Nourish
The first month is about taking a look at what you're putting into and around your bodies.
This might mean:
- Cleaning up your everyday diet
- Increasing nutrient-dense whole foods
- Paying attention to hydration
- Reducing unnecessary exposure to products and chemicals you use every day
- Looking at alcohol, nicotine, and other lifestyle factors
- Creating a healthier home environment
- Beginning supportive herbal practices appropriate for you
This isn't about perfection.
It's about awareness.
You don't have to throw away everything in your bathroom and replace it with $40 organic shampoo.
Start with the things you use every single day.
Month 2: Build + Strengthen
Once you've started removing some of the unnecessary stuff, the second month is about building healthier habits.
Think:
- Consistent, nourishing meals
- Better sleep
- Regular movement
- Time outside and sunlight
- Stress management
- Supporting your nervous system
- Continuing to reduce unnecessary environmental exposures
- Creating routines you can actually maintain
This is where preparation becomes less about "detoxing" and more about creating a foundation.
Because the goal isn't to survive 90 days of fertility prep.
It's to build habits that make you feel better long after those 90 days are over.
Month 3: Prepare for Conception
Now you're getting closer to actually trying.
This month is about bringing everything together.
You might begin:
- paying closer attention to your cycle and fertile window
- reviewing your nutrition and lifestyle habits
- continuing supportive practices
- creating space for intimacy and connection
And that last part matters.
Trying to conceive can very quickly turn sex into a scheduled activity and pregnancy into a performance metric.
That isn't exactly the recipe for romance.
Make room for dates.
Make room for affection that isn't about ovulation.
Make room for laughter.
Make room for remembering why you chose each other in the first place.
You're preparing for a baby, but you're also preparing yourselves to become parents together.
You Don't Have to Wait Until You're Trying
This is the part I wish more couples understood.
Preconception doesn't have to begin with a positive pregnancy test—or even with the first month you start trying.
You can begin preparing before that.
Those three months give you something incredibly valuable:
Time.
Time to learn.
Time to make changes.
Time to nourish your bodies.
Time to improve your environment.
Time to involve your partner.
And time to approach conception intentionally instead of feeling like you're supposed to figure everything out once you're already pregnant.
There is no such thing as a perfectly prepared couple.
And you don't need to become one.
You just need a place to start.
