The Preconception Checklist for Couples: 4 Things to Do Before You Start Trying

So you're thinking about having a baby.

Maybe you're ready to start trying tomorrow. Maybe you're planning ahead. Either way, there's something worth considering before you jump straight into ovulation tests and baby-making schedules:

Give yourselves some time to prepare.

Preconception health isn't just a woman's responsibility, either. You're creating a baby with two sets of genetic material, so both partners have a role to play.

You don't need to overhaul your entire life overnight. Start with these four areas.

1. Start With What You're Putting Into Your Bodies

Before you worry about specialty supplements and complicated protocols, look at the basics.

Are you eating mostly real, nutrient-dense foods? Getting enough protein and healthy fats? Drinking enough water? Sleeping enough?

And if your diet, alcohol consumption, smoking, or other lifestyle habits could use some attention, this is a good time to start making changes.

Think of it as giving your bodies better building materials before asking them to create something pretty damn important.

2. Don't Forget the Sperm

Fertility conversations tend to revolve around the person who will carry the pregnancy.

But sperm health matters, too.

The sperm-producing partner should be thinking about nutrition, sleep, stress, alcohol, smoking, environmental exposures—and even something as seemingly harmless as excessive heat exposure.

Hot tubs. Heated seats. Laptops sitting directly on the lap.

These things are worth paying attention to when you're preparing for conception.

This is a two-person project.

3. Take a Look Around Your Home

You don't need to throw away everything you own and replace your house with bamboo.

Please don't. 😂

But your everyday environment is worth examining.

Think about the products you use on your skin, the fragrances you breathe, the cleaners you use, what you store food in, and what you're regularly exposed to at home.

You don't have to eliminate every possible toxin.

Start by reducing the unnecessary ones.

4. Give Yourselves Some Time

One of the biggest reasons I recommend approaching preconception intentionally is that egg and sperm development takes time.

That means the choices you're making today can become part of the reproductive environment you're working with several weeks down the road.

Instead of waiting until you're actively trying and then frantically changing everything, consider giving yourselves roughly 90 days to prepare.

Use that time to learn your bodies, improve your habits, nourish yourselves, and get on the same page as a couple.

And remember:

The goal isn't perfection. It's preparation.
